Fr. Eric Nicolai preached this meditation outside in the woods on the memorial of the beheading of John the Baptist at Camp Caribou near Barry&#39;s Bay on August 29, 2025. The church celebrates both his birth and his death. The to the death prelude is important: Mark 6, 14-16:  King Herod heard about this, for Jesus’ name had become well known. Some were saying, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that is why miraculous powers are at work in him.” Others said, “He is Elijah.” And still others claimed, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of long ago.”  But when Herod heard this, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised from the dead!”Then comes the flashback that explains this. Not all give their lives in martyrdom, but all saints were faithful to the end. We too, are part of that long chain of fidelity.

When the wife is the primary breadwinner

Hurt feelings and the negativity bias

In our meditation of the week: Fr. Peter Armenio reflects on the readings for the Mass of the third Sunday of Advent also known as “Gaudete Sunday” or “Rejoice Sunday.” The very first description of Jesus in the Gospel is that he is “good news of great joy” (Luke 2:10). Great joy always surrounds him and there is always a joyous reaction in the presence of Our Lord. Therefore, one tell-tale sign that we are in the right disposition for him to come to us is the prominent fruit of the Holy Spirit: joy. Fr. Peter explains that permanent, deep joy exclusively comes from Christ and is the fruit of a close relationship with him. Joy outside of Christ is just a good mood, a thrill, or a momentary pleasure. Our true joy comes from being that good soil where we habitually seek Our Lord with our whole heart. And, if we are lacking joy, this is the time to examine ourselves: Am I looking for Jesus with all my heart? Is he number one in my life? Marriage as a Pathway to Holiness (Rebroadcast)

On today’s podcast… We contemplate the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians to learn that the face of the early Church was primarily made up of ordinary men and women. But we soon come to see that their &quot;ordinariness&quot; was distinguished by a holy anxiousness and sense of urgency to bring the Gospel to every corner of the world.Like in every era, we are witnesses of great suffering and sadness and as Christians we recognize that the greatest suffering occurs through an absence of God. Without a doubt there is a strong correlation among sadness, despair, family disfunction, substance abuse, sexual addiction, and the absence of Christ and of the Gospel. Therefore, we are called, like the Early Christians, to make Jesus Christ real in these difficult times:“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father&quot; (Matthew 5:13-16). So, if we want to disseminate the message of the Gospel and bring the Light of the World into our environments, we need to start from scratch. Through the intercession of Our Lady, may today’s reflection lead us to want to make specific resolutions to help us go forward in our love for Jesus Christ. <div>What is it like to be there on Mount Calvary, on Golgotha, at the moment of the death of Jesus in the company of Mary and St. John the Apostle and the Holy Women? Continuing our Lenten podcast series, Fr. Donncha Ó hAodha reflects on the wounds of Christ which helps us to realize our vocation to share in Our Lord’s suffering. Marriage and the virtue of fortitude

In our meditation of the week: Fr. Donncha Ó hAodha reflects on the significance of the Holy Cross in our lives and leads us to question: Have we become used to, or even indifferent, to Jesus on the Cross? The Triumph of the Cross

Matt 14, 12: John’s disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus.
Jesus was deeply affected by the sad news of John the Baptist's death. So he wanted to be alone, to pray. But people came after him, so he cured them and taught them.
Then came the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and the fish. At Herod’s banquet, we see false pride, arrogance, victimization of the righteous, the misuse of power, and murder. At Jesus’ banquet there is compassion, healing, trust, and sharing.
The disciples didn't think they could be up to the task, but Jesus showed them it was possible with his help.

The Loaves and the Fish: Have Compassion on those in Need

In this podcast for the Second Sunday of Advent, Fr. Leo Austin reflects on the invitation we receive this season to go to the desert-- a mysterious and quiet place where we can meet Our Lord face-to-face without distractions and without hiding to contemplate our lives and specifically our vocations. Even if he already knows everything, it is good for our relationship with Jesus Christ to open our hearts to him and tell him the story of our lives. This is always a little bit scary, as Fr. Leo explains, but God does not come to accuse us or threaten us. He comes to walk with us and offer us his light. This Advent, therefore, can be a great opportunity to open our eyes and allow Our Lord to point out things that maybe need to change or scars from the past that are not completely healed. Through an examination of our lives and through confession, we experience God&apos;s healing and the peace of having him inside us. iPray With The Gospel | The Feast Of St. Joseph (March 19th)

Grace is a fundamental concept for¬†the Christian life. But what exactly does 'grace' mean? This book offers an introduction to this vital area for theology and for the lived experience of faith. 
 The theme of grace is placed within the area of theology known as¬†Theological Anthropology. Theological Anthropology studies what God has revealed to us about the meaning of the human person. This particular work focuses on how the action of the Holy Trinity transforms man and raises him to the new dignity of being a son of God. 
 Topics covered include the relationship between the natural and the supernatural, as well as the meaning of grace in Sacred Scripture and in the theological tradition. Special attention is given to the thought of St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. John Paul II, as well as to the insights of biblical scholarship. 
 Particular chapters deal with various aspects of the mystery of grace, including the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the soul of the Christian, divine filiation in Christ, and the interior transformation of the soul brought about by God's saving action. This book also explores how grace operates in relation to human freedom, and in the good works which are the fruit of God's action and human cooperation. Finally, the book closes with a chapter on the way grace operates in the Christian's everyday spiritual journey towards eternal life.

The Theology of Divine Grace

Continuing our Easter Mini-Series: In this podcast, Fr. Peter Armenio turns our attention to the Apostles’ encounter with the Risen Lord along the shore of Galilee in which Peter jumps out of the boat and swims to shore out of his urgent desire to be with Christ. Peter’s actions surrounding the events of the Paschal Mystery show us that we all have the capacity to fall from the grace of God. However, Fr. Verse 1 Part 1 - The Futility of Opposing God

Montserrat Grases (Montse, to her friends) was born in Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 17 it was discovered that she had bone cancer. Less than a year later she died.
Montse's life was simple and short, but intense and deep. So powerful is the message of her life that she was recently given the title Venerable by the Catholic Church, and her cause is on the steady path to Canonization. This book, Like Any Other by Jos√© Miguel Cejas is the story of her life.
Her life had the makings of a regular teenage girl: a girl who laughed, who cried, who had hope for the future, and who had burdens of failure. Hers was a life which made a difference in the lives of others, because she came to be focused on the Love of God. Thanks to her contagious and endearing cheerfulness, Montse was able to transform every smile into a prayer, and every prayer into a smile, accepting the Will of God. Her message could be summarized in a phrase she came to use often, no matter how difficult: "Lord, whatever You want!"
A leading member of the Spanish Academy wrote: "She died without having done anything extraordinary ‚Äì nothing other than having done extraordinarily well the ordinary things of every day." Like Any Other: A Girl Named Montse

In this podcast, Fr. Peter Armenio speaks of the New Evangelization, a term coined by St. John Paul II, as the “original evangelization.” The early Christians did not go into far off lands to convert others to Christ, they started where they were: in their families, their workplace, their circle of friends. By sharing the Gospel with others, one by one, they eventually changed the culture and the world. The example of the early Christians reminds us that we don’t need to leave our place in the world to become great evangelizers. Christ calls us to be “the light of the world” in our everyday occupations and in the ordinary circumstances of our life. Our mission territory is right where we find ourselves. This is where Christ calls us to share His life. Ultimately this is what St. Josemaria envisioned for the laity, especially for “the life of the members of Opus Dei, ordinary Christians who strive to live their Christian vocation fully without leaving the world” (Conversations, no. 33). The Third Sunday of Lent | iPray with the Gospel

Today is a solemnity, in which the exclusive focus is this intimate dialogue between a celestial creature, and the holiest woman ever created. Imagine the angel, see her bow in reverence, we hear her response, we image her fear, we sense concern, her slight confusion about her becoming mother, the reassuring response of the angel, his promise that ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you’ the angel answered ‘and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. And so the child will be holy and will be called Son of God&quot;. That is shadow of the Holy Spirit. It was a reference to the to the shekinah. The holy of holies. (Exodus 13:21-22)That power now we understand is by the coming of the Holy Spirit, and he notes emphatically: “For with God nothing will be impossible” (Lk 1:37).”A meditation preached in Ernescliff College on March 25, 2025

The Power of the Most High Will Overshadow You

How can we live a sanctified life and inherit the gift of eternal life? St. Josemaria explains: “Detach yourself from the goods of this world. Love and practice poverty of spirit: be content with what is sufficient for leading a simple and temperate life. Otherwise, you will never be an apostle” (The Way, no. 631). This reflection from Fr. Peter Armenio offers three practical considerations in applying St. Josemaria’s teaching on detachment: to recognize that God is good and offers a lasting joy, to live out the Ten Commandments so that we can freely choose Christ as our ultimate good, and to foster a spirit of self-giving. By detaching ourselves from the goods of this world, we become a reflection of Christ in the world today and partakers in the joy of everlasting life. The Spirit of Detachment | Meditation Two

The Virtues of Holiness offers a road-map for navigating our everyday activities: work, family, leisure pursuits. It shows how we can reach the heights of Christian life in and through these activities. For many people this is unfamiliar territory, and the author has written this book just for them. 
 Fr. Lorda offers his readers a daily plan for those struggling with spirituality and describes strategies for gaining the virtues needed for following Christ closely. The next steps are familiarity with the life of Christ and developing a deep interior relationship with Him. Although its path is challenging, The Virtues of Holiness leaves no doubt that the struggle to stay close to Christ lies within the reach of every Christian. 
 The author draws on a wide range of Christian apologists from the Church Fathers to St. Thomas Aquinas, as well as the 16th century Spanish mystics, John of Avila, John of the Cross, and Teresa of Avila. The result is a book that is accessible to readers of all ages, and especially young believers.
