Qualities of a good husband

Carlos grew up in an extremely poor family and was an active member of the Communist Youth organization before the Spanish Civil War. He was a political prisoner of the Franco regime and served in the Spanish Foreign Legion. He worked in a fish shop and eventually started a fish shop of his own. After his conversion and joining Opus Dei, he dedicated much of his energy to trying to improve the lives of local gypsies (as people called them then) and illiterate coal miners.

Transformed by Grace: The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception

"I love the freedom of others," said St. Josemaría, "yours, that of the person passing by right now on the street, because if I didn't love it, I couldn't defend mine. But that's not the main reason. The main reason is this: that Christ died on the Cross to give us freedom, so that we could live in the freedom and glory of the children of God." 
 St. Josemaría Escrivá referred to himself as the "Last of the Romantics," and under this title Mariano Fazio portrays the founder of Opus Dei as a passionate defender of freedom. As he does so, Fazio offers an orderly, clear, and attractive presentation of many of St. Josemaría's key teachings. These teachings will challenge his readers and hopefully awaken in them the same love of freedom that St. Josemaría bore in his heart. "Don't let me be 'the last of the romantics,'" he would say. "This is Christian romanticism: to love the freedom of others, with love and affection."

Making your wife feel well loved

A guide is a welcome addition on most any journey. So it is with the greatest of all journeys: the journey to God. Psalm 116, 12-13 sings: What shall I return to the Lord for all his goodness to me? I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the Lord.
What a question. What can I render to the Lord, for all that he has really given me? For all he has done? The psalmist feels indebted to God and he resolves to repay him by an act of worship. Regardless of what we do and think today, somewhere there has to be a deep vow of gratitude, of thanksgiving. An openness to acknowledge all that I have really received in my life, in my vocation, my limbs, my sight, but even my suffering, my pain, my tiresome work, because the Lord God has given it all meaning. That the blows we receive in life &quot;are necessary to hack away what is superfluous from the huge block of marble.&quot; Like what happened to Michelangelo when he sculpted the David.

On today’s podcast… We contemplate the First Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians to learn that the face of the early Church was primarily made up of ordinary men and women. But we soon come to see that their &quot;ordinariness&quot; was distinguished by a holy anxiousness and sense of urgency to bring the Gospel to every corner of the world.Like in every era, we are witnesses of great suffering and sadness and as Christians we recognize that the greatest suffering occurs through an absence of God. Without a doubt there is a strong correlation among sadness, despair, family disfunction, substance abuse, sexual addiction, and the absence of Christ and of the Gospel. Therefore, we are called, like the Early Christians, to make Jesus Christ real in these difficult times:“You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned? It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand, where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father&quot; (Matthew 5:13-16). So, if we want to disseminate the message of the Gospel and bring the Light of the World into our environments, we need to start from scratch. You Are the Salt and the Light

In our podcast of the week, Fr. Donncha O hAodha reflects on the title of Our Lady, Queen of Peace, on this anniversary of the Dedication of the Prelatic Church of Opus Dei (May 2). The church was built by St. Josemaria Escriva as the central church of Opus Dei, the heart of the Prelature, in Rome. And he dedicated it to Our Lady of Peace.Like all of Our Lady’s titles, “Queen of Peace” stems from her motherhood, from being the Mother of Jesus Christ who is our peace. “For he is our peace… he came and preached peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near” (Ephesians 2:14,17). Therefore, as Fr. Donncha explains, in the image and title “Queen of Peace,” we see how she is “full of joy and full of peace that comes from redemption, from salvation, from Our Lord’s cross, death, and resurrection. And that’s the peace that can never ever be taken away. Marriage Unhindered – January 27, 2024 – Forgiveness

THE LITANY OF LORETO originates many generations back in Church history and popular devotion continuously added appellations of Mary as an expression of thanksgiving, honor, or petition. Even in modern times, the number of titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary continues to grow, with approvals of new titles by two of the last three popes.
This book on the Litany summarizes the origin of the present 53 titles. The explanations help deepen one's Marian piety while also learning about the history of the Church and Mary's constant and powerful help in protecting and advancing it. Those who pray the Litany of Loreto after reciting the Rosary will be enriched by learning more about each of these titles of the Blessed Mother.

The Litany of Loreto: How It Came to Be

St John of Avila, proclaimed a doctor of the Church in October 2012, offers illuminating insights on the Holy Spirit in the collection of homilies first published by Scepter in 1959. Presented as sermons given around the feasts of Ascension and Pentecost, the saint speaks directly and to the point, yet is thoughtful and affectionate in his style. He proceeds in the form of a dialogue to present the Great Unknown. The sermons begin with a short introduction and then come to a particular point supported by Scripture texts, quotations from the Fathers, well-chosen illustrations, and his own original insights. 
 Many believers may find these feasts somewhat puzzling and obscure. St. John shows how they are among the greatest feasts in the Christian calendar and deserve to be better understood.

How to Prepare the Way for the Lord

In our meditation of the week for Holy Thursday: Fr. Donncha Ó hAodha offers a profound reflection on the enduring, limitless love of Jesus Christ as revealed in the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist. Entering the Upper Room with the Apostles, we are invited to contemplate the eternal love of Christ, who “loved them to the end,” and who gives us not a symbol but his very self in the Blessed Sacrament. Fr. Donncha reminds us that Holy Thursday draws us into the heart of divine charity—the love of Christ poured out in the Eucharist and in the humble gesture of washing his disciples’ feet. Also being the feast of the priesthood, intimately bound to the Eucharist, we are reminded that priests are “the love of the heart of Jesus,” called to bring his presence into the world. Listening to the heart

On May 17, 1992, Pope John Paul II beatified Josemaría Escrivá de Balaguer. Ten years later, on October 6, 2002, he was proclaimed a saint. "He was chosen by God," affirmed the Roman pontiff, "to announce the universal call to holiness and to indicate that daily life, common activities, are a path of sanctification. It could be said that he was the Saint of the Ordinary." 
 On September 14, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI blessed a statue of St. Josemaría placed on the walls of St. Peter's Basilica, with the inscription from Sacred Scripture that summarizes his mission of serving the Church: "Et ego, si exaltatus fuero a terra, omnes traham ad meipsum"—"And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself " ( John 12:32). St. Josemaría understood that with these words, "Our Lord was telling us: if you put me at the heart of all earthly activities by fulfilling the duty of each moment, and bear witness to me in what seems big and in what seems small, then: omnia traham ad meipsum! My kingdom among you will become a reality!" (Notes from a meditation preached on October 10, 1963) 
 The present work, in three volumes, is the first attempt to gather together systematically the whole of St. Josemaría's message about the sanctification of professional work and all daily life. 
Volume 2
 The second volume focuses on St. Josemaría's teachings concerning the Christian believer, who is called to be alter Christus!, ipse Christus!—another Christ, Christ himself. This volume takes up three themes: the "sense" of divine filiation received at Baptism, which provides the foundation of the Christian life; the freedom of the children of God; and the Christian virtues required for identification with Jesus Christ, perfect God and perfect man.

Ordinary Life and Holiness, Volume 2

One of the young men who accompanied St. Josemaría Escrivá on his escape to freedom during the Spanish Civil War was Tomás Alvira. He wished to follow the founder of Opus Dei in a life of apostolic dedication, but as a married, rather than a single, person. St. Josemaría advised him to wait and, at the right time, he could become part of Opus Dei as well as be a family man with wife and children, which happened within 10 years. 
   
Our Lives in His Hands by Olga Marlin is the story of the life and adventures of Tomás and his wife Paquita, who raised a large family and whose cause of holiness is now progressing through the approval process of the Catholic Church.

How can we truly accompany Jesus in His suffering during Holy Week rather than simply observe it? In this meditation, Fr. Luke Mata emphasizes that Palm Sunday and the Passion readings invite us into a deeply personal, spiritual participation in Christ’s suffering, undertaken out of love for each of us. He encourages daily reflection on the events of the Passion—walking with Jesus from the Last Supper to Calvary—while recognizing that His sacrifice reveals the call to radical, total self-giving in our own lives. Drawing on examples like Mary of Bethany’s complete generosity and Christ’s total offering on the cross, Fr. Luke highlights that authentic Christian discipleship means loving without reserve, recalibrating our priorities toward what truly endures, and learning—especially through Mary—to repay Christ’s love with sacrificial love of our own.

The Sanctity of Life

A meditation preached deep in the Ontario woods to counsellors at Camp Caribou on a lake near Barry&#39;s Bay, August 25, 2023.
It is based on the three commandments of love mentioned in th Gospel of Matthew.
Matthew 22:34-40: When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the Law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: You must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’

Thanksgiving Day & Acts of Gratitude

In our meditation of the week: we reflect on the virtue of fortitude as the driving force to overcome temptation. St. Josemaria Escriva reminds us, &quot;A task which presents no difficulties lacks human appeal – and supernatural appeal too. If you find no resistance when hammering a nail into a wall, what can you expect to hang on it?&quot; (The Forge, no. 245). To win the prize, you cannot avoid the struggle—it is the very path to victory.   Fortitude is essential for both the spiritual life and human development. Msgr. Dolan reflects on the importance of deferred gratification—choosing to set aside immediate desires in favor of what must be done. He explains that this discipline goes hand in hand with gumption, the ability to recognize the right course of action and take decisive steps forward. A key danger in the spiritual life is abandoning the fight altogether. We can either face challenges with fear and stress or embrace them with excitement and trust.   The Gospel for the First Sunday of Lent recounts Christ’s temptation in the desert. As the perfect model of virtue, he embodies fortitude in the face of Satan’s trials. Emotional Abuse in Families

Today, January 18 to January 25 is the Octave of Christian Unity. It finishes with the feast of the conversion of St. Paul on January 25. This Octave was first conceived by Father Paul Watson a Franciscan friar of the Atonement, of Graymoor abbey in 1907. This leads us naturally to pray about the Church in her essence.
CCC 760: all that vast array of creation had really one basic purpose: to have a place of communion, brought about by a convocation. Ecclesia means call, vocation, convocation. The world was created for the church, for this assembly. Even for the mystical body of Christ.

S5 Ep. 19 - Opus Dei: A Path to Holiness with JL Marti

This is a meditation preached on July 9, 2025 at Kintore College in Toronto, after having spent almost a month in Germany.First reading is from Genesis 41. Our dramatic story of the terrible famine in Egypt. The origin of the phrase, go to Joseph.Joseph of the Old Testament had been mistreated and even hated by his brothers, now they come to him for help. It is a deeply emotional moment for Joseph, as he recognizes his brothers, those whom he had grown up with, and who had been so jealous of him, and had often mistreated him. Yet something inside told him that they were his brothers, and that he had a providential role with them. We know that these brothers were the 12 tribes of Israel, and that they would foreshadow the 12 apostles.
