Men’s Emotional Needs

Luke 12:1-7: The people had gathered in their thousands so that they were treading on one another. And Jesus began to speak, first of all to his disciples. ‘Be on your guard against the yeast of the Pharisees – that is, their hypocrisy. (...) ‘To you my friends I say: Do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. I will tell you whom to fear: fear him who, after he has killed, has the power to cast into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. Can you not buy five sparrows for two pennies? And yet not one is forgotten in God’s sight. Every hair on your head has been counted. There is no need to be afraid: you are worth more than hundreds of sparrows.’
 
Why be aware of the Pharisees? They knew the law. They were experts. Why? Because it seems a common conclusion that if someone knows the law, and is not truly affected by it, then the law must be to blame. It must not really have the power to transform or to change someone. Yet the Lord relies on our freedom. It is true now as well. Many lapsed Catholics will blame some priest or some religious person’s lack of integrity to justify why they don’t practice.

Keeping Love Alive

On this podcast we reflect on beginning a new year and what it means to begin again. During this time of prayer, we want to ask ourselves: What can I do to make these twelve months ahead spectacular? First, we want to accelerate to the finish, which means hastening towards our goal of Heaven. This brings up the topic of strategy: How do we go about doing it? Jesus Christ shows us the way. He said to be perfect like His Heavenly Father is perfect and He gives us the gift of forgiveness of sins— the sacrament of confession. The Lord is telling us that when we begin again, when we give Him a chance to forgive us, He is filled with joy because we allow Him to exercise His mercy. As a result of the sacrament, we will reflect joy and serenity because of the marvelous gift of mercy. St. Josemaria called it the sacrament of joy because it guarantees our turning back to God and restores our divine friendship with Him. This reflection should inspire us to make the resolution to do whatever it takes to go to confession regularly. It should also inspire us to ask Our Lord to help us find the right time and way to bring up the topic of “beginning again” among our friends and coworkers, especially a friend who is hurting. We want to be like the faithful friends who carried the paralytic man to Jesus; his sins were forgiven and he was brought to life (Mark 2:1-12). We want to pray about that friend (or friends) during the coming weeks, knowing that our friends will never forget us for having helped restore them to life. In this podcast, we reflect on self-denial as a way to increase our faith and relationship with Christ. If we are to follow Christ, we must deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. Self-denial allows us a certain freedom in which we can live out the Gospel message. The goal of becoming a saint takes a serious commitment, one of prayer and Eucharistic piety. We cannot let laziness get the best of us or hold us back from becoming the person we were created to be. Saint Josemaria tells us, “if you don’t deny yourself you will never be a soul of prayer” (The Way, no. 6). We need self-control to be prayerful, loving, kind, generous, and to live a life of holy purity. Living in a world where we are faced with temptation at almost every turn, self-denial and taking up our cross is of the utmost importance. We are faced with the temptation of the seven deadly sins - anger, pride, gluttony, envy, greed, lust, and sloth. In order to combat these sins, we must not put off holiness indefinitely. Paraphrasing St. Josemaria, he says, “Do it now! Now is the only shot you have. What Have I done with my Talents?

Can ambition be a good thing?
This word often evokes behavior that displays pride, vanity, and disunity.
Author Thomas Joachim invites us to a holy ambition based in the Scriptures and the writings of the Saints: an ambition not for worldly honors, but the glory of God.
He summarizes like this: &ldquo;We must reverse the usual perspective of our life. We can no longer seek to fulfill our ambitions; we must seek to welcome God&rsquo;s ambitions for us. Fulfilling our own dreams is not of primary importance, but rather that God&rsquo;s dreams for us are made real in our lives.&rdquo;
Seen this way, ambition becomes an essential virtue for sanctity, and a liberating path for the great of heart. Discover the meaning of your God-given talents and accept our Lord&rsquo;s invitation implicit in his words: &ldquo;Friend, go up higher&rdquo; (Lk 14:10).

Marriage is a path to heaven

Eph 4, 17, 20-24: I want to urge you in the name of the Lord, not to go on living the aimless kind of life that pagans live. Now that is hardly the way you have learnt from Christ, unless you failed to hear him properly when you were taught what the truth is in Jesus. You must give up your old way of life; you must put aside your old self, which gets corrupted by following illusory desires. Your mind must be renewed by a spiritual revolution so that you can put on the new self that has been created in God’s way, in the goodness and holiness of the truth.

In this podcast, Fr. Donncha Ó hAodha reflects on how the universal call to adoration is the source of our happiness and the source of our true human flourishing and maturing. We can achieve our fullest human and spiritual potential insofar as we worship and adore God with our whole being and with our lives. The universal call to adoration, to give all the glory to God, especially through our ordinary, secular, daily, and sometimes mundane/repetitive realities, in no way demeans the human person, but rather raises us up, embellishes all that we have, and enhances all that we are. As we celebrate the Feast of the Archangels (September 29), Fr. Donncha reminds us that the first function of the angels is to give glory to God. St. Michael, St. Gabriel, and St. Raphael are adorers of the Lord! It&apos;s not surprising that the saints, like St. Josemaria Escriva, would have great devotion to the Archangels, who stand before the throne of God and who kneel before the throne of God in adoration. Lord, Build my House

As we begin a new season of Lent, Fr. Peter Armenio shares a reflection on the importance of connecting with the Lord through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. A Time of Penance, Purification & Conversion

In this meditation, Fr. Peter Armenio helps us to pray and go deeper in our understanding and love for the Eucharist as we prepare for the feast of Corpus Christi. On Corpus Christi, it is a common practice in many Catholic churches to hold a Eucharistic procession following Mass. This procession is symbolic of our work as modern day apostles. We are each called to be a living monstrance, bringing the light of Christ into every aspect of our life: our family, our work place, our social gatherings, etc. Like the saints, Eucharistic devotion should be a common trait in our personal witness of Christ and our personal ability to spread the Gospel. Fr. Navigating Same-Sex Attraction Together

In this meditation for the Fourth Sunday of Advent, Fr Javier del Castillo reflects on the Gospel of the day (Luke 1: 26-38) and invites us to prepare our hearts for Christmas by striving to have a listening heart like Mary. “This Advent we have to adapt the same kind of contemplative listening of Our Lady to be able to listen to the whisper of God that comes to us” and “to prepare a place for Him in our hearts.” Advent is a time of expectation, preparation, purification and contemplation— this is true both as we prepare for the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also as we prepare to receive Him (daily or weekly) in the Eucharist. Reflecting on the life of St Josemaria Escriva, Fr Javier explains the ways that he would prepare himself for Mass every day. This is where St. Josemaria rests, beneath the main altar. Peace can be sewn in our soul through ongoing formation. St. Francis de Sales excelled at this in a time of upheaval in Europe, during the 16th and 17th century.

Matthew 9, 18-26: While Jesus was speaking, up came one of the officials, who bowed low in front of him and said, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay your hand on her and her life will be saved.’ Jesus rose and, with his disciples, followed him. Then from behind him came a woman, who had suffered from a haemorrhage for twelve years, and she touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, ‘If I can only touch his cloak I shall be well again.’ Jesus turned round and saw her; and he said to her, ‘Courage, my daughter, your faith has restored you to health.’ And from that moment the woman was well again.

S4 Ep. 20 - Training the Algorithm: Helping Your Children Navigate Social Media

Nowhere to Lay my Head

In this meditation, Fr. Leo Austin reflects on the call to holiness and the deeply personal nature of each Christian’s vocation, using the image of a “tailored suit” to describe how God lovingly designs each person’s path. Drawing from the Gospel of Luke, he meditates on Peter’s confession of Christ as the Messiah, urging us to move beyond superficial or “AI-like” knowledge of Jesus toward a lived, personal encounter where Christ becomes truly the love of our lives. He emphasizes that discipleship requires the crucifixion of ego—an inner martyrdom of pride and self-centeredness—more challenging than external persecution, but essential for spiritual growth. Through examples from saints, particularly the witness of Cardinal Francis-Xavier Nguyen Van Thuan, who endured 13 years in a Vietnamese prison with unwavering faith. Fr. Leo highlights how purification, gratitude, and humility reveal Christ’s presence even in suffering. He warns against being distracted by self-absorption or worldly noise and encourages recognizing Christ’s closeness in prayer, the Eucharist, and daily life. Ultimately, he calls listeners to respond to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?” with a heartfelt declaration of love, gratitude, and surrender, seeing Jesus as our best friend and the center of our vocation, aided by the intercession of St. Josemaria and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

It's So You

Since St. Peter of Alcantara¬†(1499‚Äì1562) wrote this treatise in 1556 to help people prepare their lives for eternity, readers need not be reminded that sin and eternity hasn't changed in the last 450 years. St. Peter offers less a practical guide on prayer and meditation than a path to deepening and enriching one's interior life in order to prepare the soul for its fi nal end. The author does so by providing a series of considerations on the elements of the spiritual life, on the Sacred Passion, and on ways to improve piety (which the author calls "devotion") and to overcome the difficulties and temptations in its achievement. This book was highly recommended by other contemporary saints including St. Teresa of Avila, whom the author appeared to upon his death. This book is a modernized edition of an English translation from the late 1920s.

On Prayer and Meditation

The cross and the resurrection are central to being Christian. But many of the meditations we read for the Stations of the Cross at Easter seem outdated. Written, it seems, many years ago, before the world got so complicated.
 Author Susanna Tamaro is an award-winning Italian Novelist and Director. Born in a middle class family in Trieste, Italy. In 1994, she wrote "Follow Your Heart", which became one of the most popular Italian books in the 20th century.
 In Meditations on the Passion of Christ book, Tamaro helps us relive the greatest drama in human history. She shows us how to overcome all the obstacles in the modern world to live a life empowered by Faith.
 As we contemplate the Fourteen Stations of the Cross, Tamaro leads us from where we are, in the middle of the world, with all our twenty-first century preoccupations, and guides us down the path that reunites us with Christ.
 This is an excellent book for groups. With color pictures that illustrate each Station of the Cross, this book will help readers, or those who make this devotion, to draw new insights from the Christ's journey to Calvary.

Meditations on the Passion

Set in the second century of the early Christian Church, Grain of Wheat takes you into the heroic lives of the early Christians. Along the way, it shows the beauty and dignity of the Christian family, along with the power of the vocation to celibacy ‚Äî a charism lived not only by priests and bishops, but by many of the lay faithful. These brave men and women, both single and married, followed Christ and spread his Kingdom while remaining in society. Through their courageous faith an entire culture was transformed, one person at a time, one family at a time.
 This work of fiction draws on early Christian testimonies, as well as more recent historical and contemporary books. It continues the saga which the author introduced in Junia (2002) and Marcus (2004).

The Sentiments of Christ: Abdicate from your Throne

How do we go about living out Jesus Christ’s radical call to love, even loving one’s enemies? Fr. Luke Mata reflects on how early Christians transformed the Roman Empire through acts of forgiveness, unity, and selfless charity, calling this a true “revolution of love.” Drawing on scripture (especially Matthew 5) and Church teachings, the reflection emphasizes that such love is humanly impossible without faith and the Eucharist, which serve as the source and sustenance of divine love. As Christians, we are challenged to forgive others, love those who are difficult, and embody Christ’s compassion in daily life — continuing the same revolution that began with Jesus on the cross.

A Revolution Of Love

In our meditation of the week: Msgr. Dolan reflects on the Transfiguration of Christ and how this scene reminds us that a major goal of the Lenten season is to create an interior silence that allows us to enjoy God&apos;s presence. Msgr. Dolan shares how the scene of the Transfiguration echoes the words of the Psalms: &quot;Be still and know that I am God&quot; (Ps 46:11). The disciples who witnessed this moment &quot;fell silent,&quot; understanding that words would have diminished its significance.    Silence is essential for encountering God. Msgr. Dolan quotes Pope Francis who explains that, &quot;We simply cannot do without the silence of prolonged prayer, which enables us to perceive God’s language and to see the whole of our existence afresh in His own light&quot; (Gaudete et Exsultate, no. 171). Lent calls us to cultivate this silence, shifting our focus from distractions to God’s will.
