The value of positive affirmation

What is my Achilles’ heel — the one weakness that keeps me from fully turning toward God? In this Lenten meditation, Fr. He explains that daily mortification, or dying to oneself in small ways, transforms ordinary sacrifices into acts of love that participate in Christ’s redemptive work. Drawing from Scripture, the lives of saints, and personal anecdotes, Fr. Luke emphasizes that suffering, when united with love, becomes meaningful and salvific. Through perseverance, humility, and trust—especially in moments of struggle — believers grow in fortitude, self-control, and love, learning to see the cross not as punishment but as a path to holiness.

The Sentiments of Christ: Abdicate from your Throne

Luke 10:25-37: ‘A man was once on his way down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell into the hands of brigands; they took all he had, beat him and then made off, leaving him half dead. Now a priest happened to be travelling down the same road, but when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite who came to the place saw him, and passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan traveller who came upon him was moved with compassion when he saw him. He went up and bandaged his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them. He then lifted him on to his own mount, carried him to the inn and looked after him. Next day, he took out two denarii and handed them to the innkeeper. “Look after him,” he said “and on my way back I will make good any extra expense you have.” Which of these three, do you think, proved himself a neighbour to the man who fell into the brigands‘ hands?’ ‘The one who took pity on him’ he replied. Jesus said to him, ‘Go, and do the same yourself.’

One might be our sheer busyness.
Busy is not your friend. It makes you feel overwhelmed, tired, and inadequate. If busy were a person, would you spend all day with that person today, and then all day with that person again tomorrow? I don’t think so.

She is showing us the child. She is showing us her son during the month of May when we have recourse to her.We can ask him to stir up the fire of our faith. Put little twigs and branches into the fire. The best twigs to get that faith raging is the devotion to our mother, as mother.It may be small now, but little aspirations, glances at images of our Lady are there to awaken something within us. Josemaria would as to “Stir up that fire of faith. Christ is not a figure that has passed. He is not a memory that is lost in history.” Mary seems to stir up devotion in us. She awakens our faith and makes us strong. The Urgency of Being Fully Formed

Divine Filiation: A Joyful Truth

In this podcast, Fr. Peter Armenio reflects on how Jesus’ example and teachings on humility are key to knowing ourselves and to knowing God. Reflecting on Scripture, specifically the parable of the Pharisee and the publican, Fr. Peter highlights how we can only know God, and give ourselves to Him, when we own ourselves and are not held back by our pride, resentments, self-absorption, or sinfulness. St. Josemaria Escriva said that Jesus’ greatest act of humility is to be a “prisoner behind the appearance of bread” in order to have an intimate relationship with each one of us and to serve us. Jesus remains in the Blessed Sacrament so that we may have him “all to ourselves; no lines, no tickets, no waiting rooms.” Fr. Peter reminds us to learn from Jesus’ example of self-emptying humility and self-giving love. “Though he was in the form of God, [he] did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the form of a slave” (Philippians 2:6-7).So, the more we empty ourselves, the more we experience Christ and allow him to live in us and take over our lives. This is my Beloved Son, Listen to Him

A meditation preached by Fr. Eric Nicolai in Kintore College on December 31, 2022 to inaugurate the New Year.
Today's first reading is from the book of Numbers 6, when Moses is told exactly how the priests are to bless.
The Lord said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them:
“‘“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you 
 &nbsp;and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you 
 &nbsp;and give you peace.”’
“So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”
This is one of the earliest blessing formulas conserved to us. In the biblical tradition, the contemplation of the face of God is associated with intimacy. How can we feel the face of God gazing upon us this year with all the hardships and challenges and joys that await?

Dating Tips For Those Who Have Discerned a Vocation to Marriage

Fr. Paul Donlan reflects on the Parable of the Sower from the Gospel of Matthew, where Jesus illustrates how people receive the Word of God differently, much like seeds falling on various types of soil, and explains the four cases: seeds that fall on the path (rejected outright), on rocky ground (received with initial enthusiasm but lacking depth), among thorns (choked by materialism, pleasure-seeking, and worldly concerns), and on rich soil (those who receive the Word with openness and bear fruit). The reflection emphasizes the dangers of modern superficiality, consumerism, rationalism, and rejection of faith, comparing cultural trends like the Enlightenment and today’s obsession with trivial entertainment to obstacles that prevent spiritual growth. At the same time, it calls for deeper engagement with faith through prayer, study, meaningful conversations, and perseverance in trials. Ultimately, Fr. Paul urges everyone to become “good soil” like Mary at the Annunciation—open, humble, and willing to let God’s word take root and transform their lives.

Blessed Alvaro (1914-1994) was at the saint's side for almost 40 years as his confessor, and from 1976 to his death as the Prelate of Opus Dei, was the successor to St. Josemaria. Blessed Alvaro relates dozens of accounts of Saint Josemaria's apostolate, his service to the Church, and his personality. Many of these stories only came to light after his death, when letters and tributes poured into Rome from around the world.

Part One: Temptation & Divine Filiation

In this podcast, Fr. Peter Armenio reflects on the meaning of the Church as the Mystical Body of Christ and why “to be a follower of Christ, we have to love the Church.” In the Letter to the Ephesians, St. Paul writes about the Church being “without stain or wrinkle.” Fr. Love for the Church

In this meditation for Christmas Day: Fr. Leo Austin helps us to contemplate the first nativity scene. Entering into Bethlehem and the stable, he invites us to look first of all to Mary and Joseph and to learn from them. All they had were each other (unity), poverty and happiness. In their simplicity, Mary and Joseph are telling us that we don&apos;t need anything but each other. We don’t need anything else but to look at the baby Jesus and focus on him. Look at Jesus-- this is what all the saints have done throughout history. He will clean our eyes and our hearts. He will make us simple in a good way. This also makes it possible for us to just stop and look at each other as human beings. Bethlehem, the city of bread. Bethlehem, the place where Jesus was born. The Eucharist is Jesus coming to us, the person of Jesus Christ taking possession of our hearts and the Blessed Trinity dwelling in our souls. And then, after realizing the love that we have received, looking at each other and at every single human being throughout history, with different eyes, with the eyes that are cleansed and purified by contemplating Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. In Jesus, we have a brother. In the Holy Family, we have a family. In Bethlehem, we have a home and we are always welcome. As Fr. Leo says, &quot;Mary, Joseph, Jesus, I want to be always with the three of you. I don&apos;t want to leave Bethlehem. I don&apos;t want to get complicated. I don&apos;t want to grow up in a bad way. Hurt feelings and the negativity bias

The opening prayer for today’s feast has to squeeze the spirit of Saint Josemaria and all his dreams into one simple and brief Collect. &nbsp;It is hard to reduce something you love and have dedicated yourself to just a few words. But this collect is like the directors cut, approved and vetted by our holy mother the church.

They are as real as your dog, or your sister, or electricity. We can't see electricity, but we can see its effects.&nbsp;

The core of our identities and our deepest realities comes from the fact that we are children of God. And, our personal worth depends on God&apos;s love who has created us and who has big dreams for us. Therefore, one of the consequences of reflecting on our divine filiation will be &quot;supernatural vision&quot;--learning how to see God&apos;s providence in everything. Because, as Fr. Dolan says, &quot;we do not know what is good for us... but we think we do. We have our own plans for happiness and too often we merely regard God as somebody who will help us accomplish them. The true state of affairs is just the opposite. God has his plans for our happiness. Physical intimacy can be beautifully spiritual

"The kings of the earth stood up and the princes met together against the Lord and against his Christ." Psalm 2:2In this episode of Sons and Kings, the discussion revolves around Psalm 2, exploring themes of freedom of conscience, the impact of ignorance on faith, and the necessity of vigilance against complacency. The conversation highlights the importance of understanding true freedom as the ability to choose good, contrasting it with false freedoms that lead to moral decay. St. Josemaria's insights on the relationship between ignorance and hatred are examined, emphasizing the need for individuals to educate themselves in faith and morality to combat worldly ideologies. Verse 2, Part 3 - The Battle for Freedom of Conscience

Montserrat Grases (Montse, to her friends) was born in Barcelona, Spain. At the age of 17 it was discovered that she had bone cancer. Less than a year later she died.
Montse's life was simple and short, but intense and deep. So powerful is the message of her life that she was recently given the title Venerable by the Catholic Church, and her cause is on the steady path to Canonization. This book, Like Any Other by José Miguel Cejas is the story of her life.
Her life had the makings of a regular teenage girl: a girl who laughed, who cried, who had hope for the future, and who had burdens of failure. Hers was a life which made a difference in the lives of others, because she came to be focused on the Love of God. Thanks to her contagious and endearing cheerfulness, Montse was able to transform every smile into a prayer, and every prayer into a smile, accepting the Will of God. Her message could be summarized in a phrase she came to use often, no matter how difficult: "Lord, whatever You want!"
A leading member of the Spanish Academy wrote: "She died without having done anything extraordinary – nothing other than having done extraordinarily well the ordinary things of every day." Here lies the prescription for the many millions of Catholics who are living their ordinary workday lives, and aim to win heaven by "turning the prose of every day into heroic verse."

Prayer is essential to the life of faith. In this book, based on Pope Benedict's weekly teachings, he examines the foundational principles of the life of prayer. Believers of various backgrounds and experience in prayer-from beginners to spiritually advanced-will be enriched by this spiritual masterpiece. 
 Benedict begins considering what we can learn from the examples of prayer found in a wide range of cultures and eras. Next, he turns to the Bible's teaching about prayer, beginning with Abraham and moving though Moses, the prophets, the Psalms to the example of Jesus. With Jesus Christ, Pope Benedict considers not only the Lord's teaching about prayer, but also his example of how to pray, including the Our Father, his prayers in the Garden of Gethsemane, and prayers on the Cross. The prayers of Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and the early Church are also explored. Benedict also draws on insights from spiritual masters, the saints, and the Church's liturgy. He challenges readers to live their relationships with God "even more intensely, as it were, at a 'school of prayer'." 
 Although Benedict provides a sweeping survey of great figures of prayer, his discussion centers on Jesus Christ and even invokes him in the study of prayer. "It is in fact in Jesus," writes Benedict, "that man becomes able to approach God in the depth and intimacy of the relationship of fatherhood and sonship. Together with the first disciples, let us now turn with humble trust to the Teacher and ask him: 'Lord, teach us to pray' (Lk 11:1)."

In today’s podcast, we conclude our three-part series exploring the prominent themes in Towards Holiness – a homily by St. Josemaria Escriva on the universal call to holiness.St. Josemaria Escriva explains that “Our Lord Jesus Christ preached the good news to all, without distinction. He calls each and everyone to holiness; he asks each and every one to love him: young and old, single and married, healthy and sick, learned and unlearned, no matter where they work, or where they are” (Friends of God, no. 294). Reflecting on this passage in Towards Holiness, Fr. Javier del Castillo reminds us to foster our interior life and relationship with Christ so that we can draw others to the faith. There are no limits upon who is called to holiness. Reclaiming Childhood in the Digital Age

St. Paul's initial transformation was a dramatic shift from Saul to Paul, from persecutor to believer, from darkness to light. And yet, the scales falling from his eyes was only the beginning: he lived and taught the lesson of transformation for the rest of his life.

The Holy Rosary: A Doorway to Redemption

Throughout the month of November, the Catholic Church commemorates all the faithful souls who have departed this life but have not yet attained the joy of heaven. The Church encourages us to pray for the souls in purgatory, so that they may be freed from the bondage of sin and admitted to their eternal reward in heaven.In this podcast, Msgr. Fred Dolan shares how we can approach our responsibility to intercede for the holy souls in purgatory. Keeping in mind those who have gone before us leads us to contemplate our own spiritual journey and encourages us to look inward and assess how our actions today will affect the demands of eternal life. The Commemoration of All Souls

March 19, 2024 is the solemnity of St. Joseph, the foster Father of Jesus. On this occasion, Fr. Eric Nicolai preached this meditation to Ernescliff College, Toronto.
Today we go from the Trinity on earth, Mary, Jesus and Joseph, to the Trinity of heaven, Father, son and Holy Spirit.
Matt 1, 20: But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”
 
There, with this vision, we can immediately renew our vocation renew our yes to God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, hand in hand with Joseph, who prompts us to do this, because he was so used to doing this in his life, it was a yes that coloured everything he did, a response to a call, a correspondence to a divine invitation, summons from the father to be there for his mission on earth.
Matt 1, 24: …And Joseph awoke from sleep, and did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, taking his wife to himself…
Obedience made it possible for him to surmount his difficulties and spare Mary.

Joseph Rose and Did as the Angel Bid him

John 20, 19-23: Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” &nbsp;After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” &nbsp;And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. &nbsp;If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.”
This breathing of Jesus recalls God's action who, in the creation, "formed man out of the clay of the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life, and so man became a living being" (cf. Genesis 2:7). Only God can pick up a bit of mud, look at it, breathe, and bring it to life.
